Bay Santa Barbara was discovered already in 1542 but its name derives from English explorer Sebastian visc, who on Dec. 4, 1602 honored the place by giving it the name of St. Barbara patron saint of miners.
In 1782, Father Junipero Serra met with California Governor Felipe de Neve on the proposal for the construction of presidio (military garrison) and the Catholic Mission at this point To convert the local Chumash Indians.
Governor de Neve has long been opposed to the Franciscan missionaries, whom he regarded as having a group of very powerful influence in California. El Presidio began to build but did not agree to the creation of the Mission. Father Serra tried to persuade the governor to change your mind but after a strong refusal to give up and returned to his hometown of Mission in Caramel. Four years later, the place de Neve replaced by the new Governor Pedro Fages, who gave the Franciscan mission of building permits. Unfortunately, Father Serra had never lived to see the fulfillment of his dream, he died just a month later.
Santa Barbara Mission was founded December 4, 1786 by the successor of Father Serra, Fermin Francisco de Lasuen. December 21, 1812 the great earthquake struck the region of Santa Barbara destroying and damaging buildings of the Mission, which took several reconstruction lat.Santa Barbara has developed rapidly over the next century, moving from the rule of Spain in the hands of Mexico in 1822, and then to the United States 1848.
In 1850, with the discovery of gold in California, the number of the population to almost 100,000 people. Completion of the Civil War in 1864 have attracted more settlers to this region and in a short time Victorian houses began to dominate the English colonial buildings.
Agriculture and cattle farming remained an important part of the local economy, although with time the emphasis shifted from farming to shipping industry. Santa Barbara Harbor has grown rapidly, more and more people and goods flowed in from eastern wybrzeża.Miasto Santa Barbara was hit by another massive earthquake in 1925 which destroyed most of the Victorian houses but left in good condition English colonial buildings.
Since then, residents began to rely only on buildings constructed in the country avoiding the wooden Victorian houses (both English and Mexican construction technology has proved to be better homes in areas prone to seismic movements.) This is evident to this day, beautiful white buildings with red tile "decorate" the city and attract tourists. Santa Barbara had a few strict orders to maintain the city's colonial style, so there are no billboards and signs in commercial and advertising in uppercase towering houses.
The main street of the city focused on State Street, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs, shopping malls (well hidden and integrated into the environment Paseo Nuevo), bookstores and boutiques.
A few original buildings comprise the complex of Presidio de Santa Barbara, composed of tiny El Curatel barracks, the oldest building in the city (the two chambers of brick Adobe open to the public). On the other side, you can visit the Presidio with the church and all the administrative and military facilities.
One of the more interesting attractions is built in colonial style in 1929, the local office of the court. Surely attract attention to the finishing of the Tunisian tiles, wrought iron decorations and beautiful murals (wall paintings). Must enter the clock tower where you can admire the city skyline.
On a hill above the town stands one of the most beautiful Franciscan Mission - Mission Santa Barbara. Construction charms, only rows of parked cars before the facade spoil the landscape. Therefore it is to escape to the gardens in the courtyard and move in time walking around the corners of the mission.
For those who rest there are beaches and bulky wooden boardwalk Stearns Wharf, built in 1872, after a huge fire which has been renewed (at the end of the pier can be reached by car;).
is definitely a city that can not be ignored on the way from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
